Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Orientation and Mobility or Special Education, Certification as a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS), and 1+ years Orientation and Mobility Specialist experience required. Applicants who do not meet these qualifications will not be considered.
A K-12 educational institution in Lehigh Acres, FL is seeking a dedicated Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS) to support students with visual impairments. This contract position spans the current school year (CSY) and offers the chance to make a significant impact on student independence and safety within the school environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement individualized orientation and mobility programs tailored to the unique needs of students with visual impairments.
- Conduct assessments to determine students' mobility skills and recommend appropriate strategies and tools.
- Collaborate closely with teachers, families, and other support staff to integrate mobility techniques into the students daily routines.
- Train students in the use of adaptive equipment and assistive technology to enhance spatial awareness and orientation.
- Monitor progress and adjust instructional strategies to optimize student outcomes.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS) credential required.
- Experience working with K-12 students who have visual impairments.
- Strong knowledge of orientation and mobility principles and adaptive technology.
- Ability to create engaging, individualized lesson plans and programs.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with educators, families, and support teams.
