At GLE an electrical estimator analyzes construction plans to provide detailed cost estimates for electrical projects, assessing labor, materials, and equipment costs to prepare bids for clients. Key responsibilities include interpreting blueprints, researching market prices, negotiating with suppliers, managing project risks, and collaborating with project teams. The role requires strong analytical, communication, and computer skills, often involving specialized software for accurate and efficient estimation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Project Analysis:

Review and interpret electrical plans, blueprints, and specifications to determine the project's scope and requirements.

  • Cost Estimation:

Calculate detailed costs for materials, labor, and equipment needed for the electrical installation.

  • Market Research:

Research current market prices for electrical materials, equipment, and labor to ensure accurate estimates.

  • Risk Assessment:

Identify potential project risks and develop strategies to mitigate them.

  • Supplier & Bid Management:

Evaluate and negotiate with suppliers and subcontractors for bids, and assist in preparing comprehensive bid proposals.

  • Collaboration:

Work closely with project managers, engineers, clients, and other stakeholders to define project scope and ensure successful project completion within budget.

  • Documentation:

Maintain accurate records of historical data and past estimates to improve future estimation processes.

  • Software Utilization:

Use specialized software tools to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of the estimation process.

Required Skills

  • Technical Expertise: A thorough understanding of electrical systems and the work of an electrician.
  • Analytical Skills: Strong quantitative and analytical skills to interpret complex data and make informed cost decisions.
  • Attention to Detail: Meticulous accuracy in cost estimations and document preparation.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills for collaborating with clients and project teams.
  • Computer Proficiency: Mastery of specialized estimation software and general computer systems.
  • Organizational Skills: Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field is preferred.
  • Several years of experience in electrical estimating or a related construction role preferred.
  • Familiarity with electrical industry standards, regulations, and best practices.
  • Completion of electrical apprenticeship or bachelor’s degree in Project Management, Construction Management or related field required
  • Electrical Masters License preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years experience working in the construction/electrical field required
  • Minimum of 3 years of supervisory experience in the field directing a team preferred
  • Must be able to travel to various jobsites as the project demands

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS

The Electrical Estimator is responsible for all phases of the assigned estimate. This position oversees the request for bid (R.F.Q.) from bid document review including but not limited to schedules and specifications. This position requires day-to-day management of all facets of the estimate.

OVERVIEW OF EXPERIENCE AND FUNCTIONS

  • Attends all job coordination meetings and is the liaison with other contractors to assure exchange of information
  • Works with the customer and owner to understand the project, scope, and timeline, while building strong relationships for continued customer service
  • Quantifies bid documents using our estimation software
  • Sends out for pricing, all materials and subcontractors required for the electrical installation of the project being quoted
  • Reviews the project/owner specifications
  • Communicates with accounting and estimating support to ensure proper bid rates are being utilized during the bid process
  • Communicates with accounting the need for project specific bonding, insurances, and financing
  • Drafts proposal letters for review with senior management
  • Advises Senior Management of any significant issues such as manpower, costs, scheduling and the like that will place the project at risk
  • Reprices the project and makes continued updates to the proposal as changes occur throughout the life cycle of the bid
  • Submits, tracks and quotes RFI’s and responses
  • Completes other duties and tasks assigned as deemed appropriate by management
  • Strong computer skills (e.g., Excel, Microsoft Word, Outlook,) required particularly Excel
  • Ability to work cohesively with external and internal parties
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills: ability to manage multiple pricing efforts at once and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, set priorities, and follow projects to completion
  • Ability to think “out of the box” for continuous process improvement
  • Strong problem-solving skills required
  • Strong, positive customer service approach to employees, management, contractors, and customers
