Job Description

Physical Therapy Assistants provide services under the supervision of a licensed Physical Therapist to help patients restore movement, reduce pain, and improve functional independence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver care: Implement treatment plans, perform therapeutic exercises, manual therapy, gait training, and modalities as directed by the Physical Therapist.
  • Patient interaction: Monitor patient progress, document responses to treatment, and report changes to the supervising Physical Therapist.
  • Safety and education: Ensure patient safety during interventions and instruct patients and caregivers on home exercise programs and adaptive techniques.
  • Equipment management: Prepare and maintain treatment areas and equipment; ensure infection control and safety standards.
  • Collaboration: Communicate effectively with the interdisciplinary team, participate in care planning, and attend required meetings and trainings.
  • Compliance: Maintain accurate, timely documentation and adhere to facility policies, state regulations, and professional standards.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Associate degree from an accredited Physical Therapist Assistant program.
  • Licensure: Current PTA license or certification in the state of practice.
  • Experience: 1-3 years of clinical experience preferred; new graduates considered.
  • Skills: Basic proficiency in therapeutic techniques, patient assessment, and documentation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience: Prior experience in outpatient orthopedics, skilled nursing, home health, or pediatrics.
  • Certifications: CPR/BLS; specialty certifications (e.g., LSVT, NDT) a plus.
  • Attributes: Strong communication, time management, and problem-solving skills.

Skills and Competencies

  • Clinical: Knowledge of therapeutic modalities, exercise progression, and safe patient handling.
  • Interpersonal: Compassionate patient care, clear verbal and written communication.
  • Technical: Comfortable with electronic medical records and basic computer use.
  • Physical: Ability to lift, transfer, and assist patients as required.

Working Conditions

  • Environment: Clinic, hospital, skilled nursing facility, or patient homes; may require standing, bending, and lifting.
  • Schedule: Day shifts with occasional evenings or weekends depending on facility needs.
  • Travel: May require travel between sites for multi-site employers.
