Job Summary
Performs advanced mechanical work involving the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of water and wastewater equipment and facilities. Responsibilities include inspecting, servicing, and repairing pumps, motors, generators, engines, and related equipment; supporting preventive maintenance and asset management programs; maintaining accurate maintenance records; and ensuring the reliable operation of utility systems. This is an essential position that requires participation in a rotating on-call schedule, emergency response during disasters, and a commitment to workplace safety, ethical conduct, excellent customer service, and continuous problem-solving. Duties and Responsibilities

  • Inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair pumps, motors, generators, engines, and related mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Diagnose equipment malfunctions and perform necessary repairs, adjustments, or component replacements.
  • Perform preventive maintenance to maximize equipment reliability and service life.
  • Coordinate with vendors and parts suppliers to obtain materials and specialized services.
  • Maintain accurate inspection, maintenance, and repair records.
  • Support asset management and preventive maintenance initiatives.
  • Participate in a rotating on-call schedule and respond to emergencies, including working extended hours during hurricanes and other disaster events.
  • Promote safe work practices, ethical behavior, and high-quality customer service.
  • Demonstrate initiative, intellectual curiosity, and a commitment to identifying and resolving operational issues.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Education
  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience
  • Two (2) years of experience in mechanical repair of electrical motors, pumps, compressors, and related equipment.
  • Experience operating and maintaining wastewater pumping facilities and related equipment.
  • Experience performing mechanical work on underground utilities and operating construction/maintenance equipment.
  • Experience with asset management systems and Data Flow SCADA is preferred.
  • A comparable combination of education and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid Florida Class "B" CDL with tanker and air brake endorsements required at the time of application.
  • FWPCOA Wastewater Collection "C" Certificate or certification obtained within six (6) months of hire.
  • OSHA Confined Space Training.
  • Lean Six Sigma White Belt Certification, or certification obtained within one (1) year of hire.

Key Competencies
  • Mechanical aptitude with skilled use of tools.
  • Knowledge of wastewater pumping systems and underground utility maintenance.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and follow technical manuals, drawings, and instructions.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, GIS mapping systems, and paper maps.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Skilled in the use of hand and power tools.
  • Professional, collaborative, and customer-focused approach.
  • Ability to pass medical evaluations for respirator and SCBA use.
  • Must comply with OSHA standards related to facial hair and respirator use.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and environmental conditions.
  • Ability to safely perform physically demanding mechanical work while wearing required personal protective equipment, including respirators.
  • Ability to regularly lift up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift up to 75 pounds.
