Description: The Medical Assistant will support the daily operations of the gastroenterology office by providing clinical and administrative assistance to physicians, clinicians, and patients. This role is essential in ensuring smooth patient flow, accurate electronic record-keeping, and optimal patient care.

Essential Duties: 
<ul>
<li>Prepare charts for upcoming appointments by adding Past Medical History (PMH), medications and allergies, past surgeries/hospitalizations, social history, family history and any other pertinent information</li>
<li>Prepare patients for examination and treatment by taking vital signs, medical history, and documenting information in the electronic medical record (EMR) system </li>
<li>Send orders for labs, diagnostic imaging, procedures, referrals and other care ordered by the provider and follow up to see that care is completed and reports are in the chart</li>
<li>Responsible for entering recalls and helping to contact the patient to schedule as needed</li>
<li>Handle new prescription/prescription refills as directed by the physician </li>
<li>Collaborate with healthcare providers and other team members to ensure patient care is delivered seamlessly and safely</li>
<li>Maintain strict adherence to infection control protocols and safety standards</li>
<li>Participate in Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) as needed</li>
<li>Answer and triage phone calls accordingly and assist patients when possible</li>
<li>Provide patient education related to procedures, tests, medications and insurance coverage as needed</li>
<li>Conduct physician referrals as well as service pre-certifications on an as needed basis</li>
<li>Maintain patient records, ensuring confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA regulations</li>
<li>Participate in ongoing training and professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge</li>
<li>Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

Physical Demands
The employee is frequently required to walk, sit, use hands for fine manipulation, handle or feel and reach with hands and arms using a keyboard and video display terminal. The employee is occasionally required to stand and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and climb stairs. The employee should be able to exert up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally, lift and move up to 25 lbs. The work environment is typically quiet to moderate with standard office and procedure room noise levels. The Medical Assistant must be able to observe safe practice criteria in assisting patients.
