Job Summary

The Department of Chemistry & Physics at Jacksonville University invites applications for an adjunct instructor to teach undergraduate courses in any of the following the areas:
  • Introductory College Chemistry
  • General Chemistry
  • Organic Chemistry

The Introductory and General Chemistry lectures are mainly taught in the mornings on M-Th, and the labs are taught in the afternoons and on Fridays. The lectures are in 75-minute intervals, two days a week, while the lab sections run once a week for approximately 3 hours.

Organic Chemistry lectures run late morning/early afternoon, and lab runs in the afternoons on M-Th.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Adjunct faculty must perform all job duties associated with teaching courses as the postsecondary level. These duties include:
  • Deliver high-quality instruction in lecture and laboratory courses.
  • Prepare course materials, syllabi, lectures, and laboratory activities in accordance with departmental learning outcomes.
  • Develop, administer, and grade assignments, quizzes, exams, laboratory reports, and other assessments, providing timely and constructive feedback.
  • Maintain accurate student records and submit final grades by established deadlines.
  • Respond promptly to student questions and provide appropriate academic support during office hours of by appointment.
  • Use the University's learning management system and other instructional technologies as appropriate.
  • Maintain a safe laboratory environment and ensure compliance with University and laboratory safety policies and procedures.

Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to effectively teach and engage students with diverse academic backgrounds.
  • Proficiency with Blackboard, or the ability to learn them quickly.

Education, Certificates, Licenses, and Experience:
  • Master's degree or higher in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or closely related field from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of 18 graduate credits in the discipline.
  • Previous college-level teaching experience is preferred, particularly in introductory level chemistry lecture and lab.
