Overview
This job description is for a Lead Instrumentation and Electrical Engineer experienced in the design, sizing, selection, and specification of instruments and electrical components used in water and wastewater treatment facilities. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and integrating instrumentation, control, and electrical systems into water and wastewater facility as well as packaged process equipment such as RO skids, pump skids, and chemical dosing systems, ensuring designs are compliant with industry codes and standards.
The I&amp;E Engineer will work closely with Process Mechanical Engineers and Designers to deliver fully integrated, constructible, and maintainable system designs. Experience in controls integration, instrument hook-up details, and control network architecture is required.
 
Key Responsibilities
 
1. Instrumentation and Electrical Design
· Design and specify field instruments, sensors, transmitters, control valves, and switchgear suitable for water and wastewater service.
· Develop and review instrumentation hook-up drawings, cable schedules, and loop diagrams.
· Perform cable and cable tray sizing based on system load and environmental requirements.
· Create and review instrument datasheets, instrument index, and I/O lists to ensure alignment with P&amp;IDs and process requirements.
· Ensure proper integration of instruments into 3D models, coordinating with mechanical layouts and skid assemblies.
 
2. Controls and Systems Integration
· Specify and configure PLC-based control systems, preferably Allen-Bradley or equivalent, for process automation.
· Develop or review control system architectures, including control panels, network diagrams, and communication protocols (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, etc.).
· Collaborate with system integrators to ensure accurate programming and panel design that meets process control needs.
· Support testing and commissioning of electrical and instrumentation systems, including loop checks, I/O testing, and functional verification.
 
3. Codes, Standards, and Quality Assurance
· Ensure all designs comply with applicable ISA, IEEE, NFPA 70 (NEC), AWWA, and ASME standards.
· Validate that equipment and components meet design specifications and are compatible with mechanical and process interfaces.
· Review vendor documentation for compliance with project requirements and electrical safety standards.
· Support quality reviews to ensure documentation and design packages are complete, accurate, and ready for fabrication and installation.
 
4. Coordination and Collaboration
· Work collaboratively with Mechanical Engineers, CAD Designers, and Project Managers to ensure full integration of instrumentation and electrical designs.
· Participate in interdisciplinary design reviews to identify and resolve interface issues between mechanical, electrical, and control systems.
· Provide input and support for constructability, commissioning, and operations teams.
· Assist in standardizing I&amp;E design practices, templates, and specifications within the department.
 
 
Qualifications
